An Introduction to Wuhan College

History:Wuhan College traces its roots to 2003, when Zhongnan University of Economics and Law Wuhan College was established with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2012 the College was authorized to confer bachelor's degrees. In 2015 the Ministry of Education approved its transition into an independent, privately run undergraduate institution. In 2023 the College passed the Ministry of Education's Undergraduate Teaching Qualification Assessment.

Non-profit:Wuhan College is sponsored by Wuhan Yidan Education, Science and Culture Development Co., Ltd. and operates on a non-profit, public-interest basis. Its founder, Mr. Chen Yidan, is a principal founder of Tencent, the initiator of the Tencent Charity Foundation and the founder of the Yidan Prize. Since 2009 he has invested RMB 2 billion to establish Wuhan College as a donation-funded institution on the principle of ‘seeking no return on his investment’, pioneering non-profit, privately run, public-interest higher education in China. All tuition and other income is devoted entirely to the College's development and to the education of its students. In 2016 the Hubei Yidan University Education Development Foundation was established to provide sustained support for the College's construction and growth; it has donated a cumulative RMB 213 million. In addition to national scholarships and grants, the College funds its own scholarship scheme each year, administers the Chen Yidan Teaching and Scholarship Award endowed by social donors, and offers further awards such as the Songhai, Huazhi, Tencent and Zhitong scholarships. Since 2019, RMB 151 million in scholarships and financial aid has been disbursed.

Campus:The College is located at No. 333 Huangjiahu Avenue, Jiangxia District, Wuhan. Flanked by lakes on two sides, it has its own sailing education base, stands next to the Military World Games Village, and is served directly by Metro Line 8 at its East Gate. The campus master plan was led by Academician He Jingtang, one of China's foremost architectural designers; the building clusters are seamlessly integrated with the exceptional natural setting of Huangjia Lake, and the open and varied spatial layout gives the campus a distinctive character and a sense of grandeur. Donor-named buildings — the Mr. and Mrs. Chen Yidan Library, the Ma Huateng Academic Complex Building, the Penguin Square, the Confidants Academic Complex, the Chenye Laboratory Complex and the Virtus Inspire Lab Complex — highlight the College's close ties with social philanthropy.

Disciplines:The College comprises eight schools and one division: the School of Accounting, the School of Finance and Economics, the School of Management, the School of Information Engineering, the School of Law, the School of Art and Media, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Marxism, and the Division of General Education. It offers 39 undergraduate programs and 2 vocational undergraduate programs across eight disciplines. Programs in economics, management and law carry forward the academic heritage of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and build on that strength; programs in engineering (information technology) carry Tencent's imprint and have developed a distinctive profile; programs in literature, the arts, education and the sciences advance in tandem with these leading programs.

Since its transition in 2015, the College has been approved to launch three programs that are national or provincial firsts: Supply Chain Management, the first undergraduate program nationwide outside the Ministry of Education's catalog; Cross-Border E-Commerce, among the first cohort of such undergraduate programs in China; and International Economic and Trade Rules, the first of its kind in Hubei Province. Supply Chain Management has since been designated a pilot program for New Liberal Arts construction by the Ministry of Education's Teaching Steering Committee. The College holds 3 national-level first-class undergraduate courses, 1 provincial advantageous and characteristic discipline (cluster), 8 provincial first-class undergraduate program construction sites, 23 provincial first-class undergraduate courses, 2 provincial teaching teams, 7 provincial outstanding grassroots teaching organizations and 3 provincial teaching achievement awards. It has been approved for 89 Ministry of Education industry-academia collaborative education projects, 2 provincial ‘Jingchu Outstanding Talent’ collaborative education projects, 1 provincial new engineering practice base construction project and 63 provincial education and teaching research and reform projects; for a provincial demonstration center for curriculum-based ideological and political education, together with 2 provincial excellent courses and 1 excellent teaching case in this field; and for 3 national- and provincial-level planned textbooks.

Resources:The College employs more than 980 full-time and part-time faculty members, forming a high-quality teaching team — firm in political commitment, accomplished in professional practice and highly effective in the classroom — that meets the needs of applied talent development. Among its own full-time faculty, 42% hold senior professional titles, 96% hold a master's degree or above and 25% hold a doctorate. Two are experts entitled to the State Council Special Allowance, two are national-level distinguished teachers, and four have been selected for provincial talent programs. The College has also appointed more than 20 senior executives of leading Chinese and international companies and industry leaders as Professors of Practice.

The campus covers 1,001.31 mu (approximately 66.75 hectares), with a building floor area of 417,400 square meters. Teaching and research equipment is valued at RMB 112.2311 million, the library holds 1.73 million print volumes, campus network egress bandwidth reaches 23 Gbps, and there are 85 on-campus laboratories and training rooms and 206 off-campus internship and training bases.

Education:The College has a full-time equivalent enrollment of 15,193 students, including 14,608 regular undergraduates (four-year, top-up degree and vocational undergraduate students). It is pursuing a reform of high-quality applied talent development built on ‘one principal body, two integrations and eight joint initiatives’: industry-education integration with leading companies such as Tencent, Huawei, JD.com, ChinaSoft International and DACHU Network, and interdisciplinary innovation in teaching, both aimed at strengthening students' professional and practical competence. Cooperation with UK professional bodies supports a dual-certificate model that combines an academic degree with a professional qualification. The College has jointly established a Modern Industry College of Intelligent Vision Technology with ChinaSoft International, a Digital Intelligence Finance Industry College with Seentao Technology, a Digital Intelligence Technology Industry College (Data Annotation Industry College) with Wuhan Cloud Computing Technology Co., Ltd., a Low-Altitude Economy Smart Learning Factory (the MIIT International Low-Altitude Economy Industry College project) with Xuandu Space-Time Cloud Education Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd., and a China Sailing Industry Talent Training Center with the Chinese Yachting Association — all focused on cultivating high-quality applied talent. The teaching quality of these programs is highly recognized by the professional bodies, and the number of professional qualification courses exempted ranks among the highest of comparable signature classes in China. The College runs seven signature classes: Accounting (ACA Class), Financial Management (CIMA Class), Software Engineering (Tencent Class), Network Engineering (Huawei Class), Financial Management (Digital Intelligence Finance Experimental Class), Software Engineering (ChinaSoft International Outstanding Engineer Class) and Social Sports Guidance and Management (CYA Sailing Class). Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business delivers its Public Welfare Lecture Series on campus free of charge to all faculty and students, regularly inviting renowned entrepreneurs and scholars to give lectures. Tencent's co-working space located on campus has been approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology as a national-level co-working space, and the College has been recognized by the Hubei Provincial Department of Education as a demonstration base for student entrepreneurship, both promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. Since 2022, students have won 5,658 national and provincial awards in Category A and B academic discipline competitions and in cultural and sports competitions, and have secured 30 national-level and 90 provincial-level projects under the College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program.

Research:Since 2019, the College has been approved for more than 310 government-funded research projects at provincial and ministerial level or above, including 2 from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 from the National Social Science Fund, 1 from the China National Arts Fund and 5 from the Ministry of Education's Humanities and Social Sciences program. It has completed 3 National Social Science Fund projects and 1 China National Arts Fund project. Faculty have published nearly 300 papers in core journals and 55 academic monographs; the College has been granted more than 110 national patents, including 30 invention patents, and over 190 software copyrights, and has undertaken more than 730 commissioned research projects. It has been approved for 10 outstanding young and middle-aged scientific and technological innovation teams of Hubei universities and 1 key research base for humanities and social sciences in Hubei. It has received 3 Hubei Provincial Government Development Research Awards and 2 Wuhan municipal awards for outstanding achievements in social sciences, and has shared in 2 Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards; 25 of its research findings have received affirmative instructions from provincial leaders.

International:The College partners with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) to offer the Accounting (ACA) signature class, and with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) to offer the Financial Management (CIMA) signature class. It has established inter-institutional partnerships with more than ten renowned universities, including the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford and the London School of Economics and Political Science in the UK, Stellenbosch University in South Africa, Singapore Management University, San Diego State University in the USA and the University of Bordeaux in France. Since 2018, the College and its partner universities have jointly run sponsored international programs such as winter and summer visiting programs, semester exchange, international internships and summer courses. It has fully funded 358 students for study visits abroad and more than a thousand students for online courses at leading overseas universities. A total of 411 graduates have gone abroad for further study, nearly 80% of them at universities ranked among the world's top 200. The College has a mechanism for recommending graduates for master's programs at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and runs joint credit and degree programs with leading overseas universities such as the University of Bath, the University of Surrey, Coventry University and the University of Dundee in the UK. Authorized to offer degree education to international students, the College has admitted and trained more than one hundred students from Belt and Road countries such as Kazakhstan and Russia, enriching the international atmosphere on campus and promoting multicultural exchange.

Reputation:Since 2019, the College has received RMB 225 million in social donations. In recent years its social influence and appeal to applicants have grown steadily, and the quality of its student intake has continued to rise, achieving leapfrog growth. Admission cut-off scores and applicant rankings have improved substantially both within and beyond Hubei. Over the past three years, leading media outlets such as People's Daily, Guangming Daily and China Education Daily have published more than 1,100 reports on the College's reform, development and talent cultivation. For several consecutive years it has ranked among the top privately run universities nationwide in the ShanghaiRanking and Airuishen (CUAA) rankings, earning the reputation of a ‘Six-Star Private University of China’.
